I never bother to make a hellevator until at least the Molten Pickaxe. Well after playing 600 hours of Terraria I found it much easier to always have a hell-a-vator mainly for speed purposes since of needed to get to certain depths in the game for other areas eg: hallowed/crimson underground biomes.
